Smart switch, thermostat, doorbell and lock installation in Lititz, PA

A smart switch, thermostat, doorbell or lock in Lititz runs the $70 hourly rate plus the $30 service charge — most take 1–2 hours, so $100–$170 before materials.

Smart switches, thermostats, video doorbells and door locks, wired in and working on your phone before I leave.

What it costs

$70 per hour — most of this work takes 1–2 hours.

$30 service charge. Covers the trip and the first look. Applies once per visit, including the preset jobs.

Materials are extra, at cost, with the receipt. The full rate sheet has the rest of the fine print.

What's included

  • The old device off, the wiring identified, and the new one wired, including the neutral and ground a smart device wants and an old switch didn't
  • Thermostat power sorted out: a spare conductor repurposed at the furnace, or the adapter the unit ships with
  • Doorbells and locks fitted to the door and frame you have, with the existing transformer checked for the voltage the new one needs
  • The device on your wifi, in your app, named sensibly, and tested with you before I go

What's not

  • Running a new wire to a spot that has no power at all
  • Your network. If the wifi doesn't reach the front door, that's a different problem and I'll say so rather than guess
  • The devices, the subscriptions and the accounts

What to have ready

  • The device, your wifi name and password, and your phone with the app installed and logged in
  • Which switch, thermostat or lock it's replacing
  • For a lock: whether the door is already bored for the one you bought

Questions people ask

My smart switch needs a neutral wire. Does my box have one?
It depends on how the light was wired, not on the age of the house. A switch fed from the ceiling, which is called a switch loop, has no neutral at the box. I find out with the plate off, and there are switches made to work without one.
Will a smart thermostat work with my furnace?
Usually, and the real question is power. These need a C wire; there's often a spare conductor in the bundle at the furnace that can be used as one, and where there's not, most units ship an adapter for it.
Do you set it up or just install it?
Both. A device that's wired in but not on your phone isn't finished. I pair it, test it with you, and leave it named something you'll recognize in six months.
Can a video doorbell go on a brick frame?
Yes, with masonry anchors, and with a wedge if your door frame faces the wrong way down the porch. The existing chime transformer has to carry it, which I check first.

How the job goes

The install part is normal electrical work; the setup is where most of the time goes. Wiring a smart switch is the same as wiring a plain one, except for the parts an old switch never needed: a neutral, a ground, and enough room in the box for something that’s twice as deep. Houses around here are full of switch loops with no neutral at the box, and two minutes with the plate off answers that question before you buy the wrong thing.

Thermostats mostly come down to the C wire. Most furnaces have a spare conductor sitting unused at the control board that can be used for it, and when they don’t, the adapter in the box usually does the job. Doorbells come down to the transformer and the angle of the door frame. Locks come down to whether the door is already bored for the model you picked. After that, everything goes on your wifi, gets tested with you standing there, and gets named something the rest of the house will recognize.
